This page provides you with co-op/internship eligibility and guidelines, co-op timelines, and how to reach out to your co-op advisor/co-op faculty. 

Co-op Eligibility

Khoury
  • Complete 2 consecutive semesters
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Complete the Co-op Prep Course on Canvas

CPS
  • Complete 3 consecutive quarters
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher

Coop Timeline and Processing

Khoury Students: We are currently processing Spring Co-ops. The latest date to process a Spring co-op is January 27th, 2025.

CPS Students: We are currently processing Winter Co-ops. The latest date to process a Winter co-op is December 13th, 2024.

Co-op FAQs

Can I go on co-op on my final term?

Students are not allowed to do a co-op/internship in their final semester. Your College has specific rules for graduating students to complete the remaining coursework needed to graduate. Please consult with your academic advisor for questions about graduation requirements. International students can not use CPT in their final semester. If an international student wants to work during their last semester you must use Pre-OPT and can only work part-time while taking your remaining coursework. Please consult with OGS for questions about Pre-OPT/visa requirements.

Can I do back-to-back co-op?

For Khoury College Students: “For Khoury College students: You may complete back-to-back co-ops with a maximum duration of 8 months during the Spring/Summer or Summer/Fall terms, but not during the Fall/Spring terms. For specific co-op timing, please refer to the Khoury Resource Center.

For CPS College Students: Students can do back-to-back co-ops/internships from Fall/Winter, Winter/Spring, Spring/Summer, and Summer/Fall for a maximum duration of 6 months. All co-ops/internships should be for the entire duration of the term. Please refer to the CPS Co-op Website for Graduate Student Important Dates and Deadlines section for acceptable start and end dates for a Co-op/internship.

For COE College Students: Students can do a Spring/Summer or Summer/Fall for their co-op opportunity for a maximum duration of 6 months. Please refer to the COE Master’s Co-op website for more details on coop eligibility and guidelines.

For CSSH College Students: Students can do one co-op from January – June, or July – December for a maximum duration of 6 months. Please refer to the CSSH Co-op website for more details about co-op eligibility and guidelines.

What’s the maximum co-op duration?

For Khoury students: Maximum duration for co-op is 8 months.

For CPS students: Maximum duration for co-op is 6 months.

For COE students: Maximum duration for co-op is 8 months.

For CSSH students: Maximum duration for co-op is 6 months.

Can I do a global co-op?

For Domestic students: You can do a global co-op, but will need to work with the Global Experience Office to get work authorization/approval to work in a country that is different from your country of birth.

For International students (working remotely for a foreign company): You can do a global co-op and work remotely for an overseas company. This requires CPT authorization and enrollment in the co-op work experience course as well as possibly enrolling in the EXED 5945 course for remote co-ops (if not enrolled in an on-ground academic course).

For International students (working in their country of citizenship): You can do a global co-op (if studying in the US) but will need to work with the Global Experience Office and fill out the global co-op form. You will also need to work with your co-op advisor to check for co-op eligibility as well as steps to get your co-op approved/processed.

 

 

Who do I go to for CPT?

For Khoury and CPS College students: If you have questions about co-op eligibility, co-op timings, and inquiries about co-op processing contact seattlecareerteam@northeastern.edu. For visa, and I-20 questions related to co-op, please contact OGS through the OGS Student Portal or make an appointment here.

For COE College students: Refer to the COE Master’s Co-op website for co-op eligibility and co-op contacts which vary by degree program.

For CSSH College students: Refer to the CSSH Co-op website for program director and co-op advisor contact information.

Can I extend my co-op?

For Khoury College students: You can extend your co-op as long as the next term is not your final (graduation) semester, or is not a fall/spring back-to-back co-op. If you are completing a Spring co-op you can extend to summer as long as summer is not your final semester. If completing a Summer co-op, you can extend into fall as long as fall is not your final semester. Please contact seattlecareerteam@northeastern.edu if you have additional questions regarding co-op extensions.

For CPS College students: You can extend your co-op from Fall/Winter as long as the winter quarter is not your final quarter, You can extend a Winter/Spring co-op as long as the spring quarter is not your final quarter. You can extend from Spring/Summer as long as the summer quarter is not your final quarter. CPS students can do a maximum of 6 months of co-op.
