SEATTLE NATURE
Spending time in nature is a great way to destress and boost your mood. Most of these parks can be accessed by public transport:
- Carkeek Park
- Discovery Park
- Green Lake Park
- Ravenna Park
- Seward Park
- Volunteer Park
- Explore more parks in your local neighborhood
To get out into the mountains it can be helpful to have/rent a car, but from May-September you can take the Trailhead Direct bus to some of the most popular trails. For details on other trails and hiking etiquette explore the Washington Trails Association.
NU HEALTH INSURANCE PLAN & TIPS
Everything you need to know is here https://studenthealthplan.northeastern.edu
As the academic year progresses keep these tips in mind as you navigate your health care:
- Explore more about NUSHP, how to access your digital ID card and verification of coverage letter.
- Remember you get $150 back for gym memberships or a movement class (yoga, dance, fitness). Login to your account and fill the form online.
Primary Care
- If you are looking for a primary care provider previous students have used Zoomcare and Kinwell as they often have many available appointments and several locations (one from both around the corner from 225 building). Remember it is your responsibility to always verify if a provider is in-network.
- You get a FREE annual checkup (preventative care) with a primary care provider, just ask them to bill it as your annual preventative care appointment.
- Keep in mind that Blue Cross Blue Shield in WA State is called Premera or Regence. Sometimes providers get confused and bill these insurances and get denied. REMIND them that your insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts.
If you ever have an emergency and are able to bring yourself to an Emergency Room (ER), the nearest one to campus is Virginia Mason Medical. Always call 911 if you are in a situation where you need immediate help.
Dental & Vision
The student health plan DOES NOT include adult dental or vision. You might see pediatric dental on your plan but that is for people under the age of 18, so don’t get confused.
Here are a few options to explore:
- BASIX discount: gives a modest discount on some dental services.
- UW Dental Clinic: reduced cost for dental services
- Low Cost Dental & Vision: explore free or reduced cost clinics in King County. On the site select “King” then filter for Dental & Vision to see options.
